Welcome to Books on Bikes! Mary and Rebecca, Charlottesville City School librarians are excited to begin a project that will bring books to kids in Charlottesville, VA. The project has just begun and we have big ideas, big plans, and big dreams to create a successful literacy and community outreach program in the city of Charlottesville.

The plan is to show up on our bikes throughout the city and create excitement for reading by giving out free books to kids. Problem: we don’t have bikes, we don’t have cargo bikes or a trailer to carry books. So for now we are driving in cars and delivering books by wagon, backpack, or however else we can get books into children’s hands. Fundraising and a Kickstarter will be in our future. For now, we are talking with local community groups and people that can help us determine where the greatest needs are. We are working on routes, researching costs, and slowly developing our idea so we can roll this out full force by next summer. In the meantime, we will be popping up around Charlottesville with free books and that is exciting!
